Anthony Scaramucci’s Appointment as White House Communications Director

By Deven Upadhyay.

Anthony Scaramucci is America’s new communications director. What does Scaramucci contribute to the Trump Administration?

On July 21st 2017, Sean Spicer shocked Americans with his startling decision to relinquish his role as White House press secretary. The now-resigned press secretary announced the news shortly after president Trump appointed financier and founder of SkyBridge Capital Anthony Scaramucci as the new white house communications director. In addition, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, deputy white house press secretary, will be assuming the role of press secretary as Spicer will remain with the role temporarily until August. Contrary to the common opinion that Spicer had a rather vicious confrontation with the president, Spicer simply stated that there were “too many cooks in the kitchen” and  “…my decision was to recommend to the president that I give Anthony and Sarah a clean slate to start from.” Spicer believes that the optimal way to handle communication affairs is to limit the amount of influences that play a role in important decision-making in order to make such decision-making holistically more effective. To ensure the most peaceful transfer of power, Spicer wished Scaramucci the best of luck in his future endeavors. He told the Associated Press on Saturday that “It’ll be great, he’s a tough guy” in respect to Scaramucci’s appointment as communications director. Spicer also expressed gratitude for the president and his experiences under the president in a tweet:

Prior to founding the investment firm SkyBridge Capital and pursuing politics, Anthony Scaramucci led a rather prosperous life. Scaramucci is a proud native of New York, as one can most likely deduce from his accent. Despite living in the middle-class, he enjoyed the comfort of his Long Island home and the benefits of a quality public school education. Here, young Scaramucci is pictured selling bikes for his uncle. He seems very enthusiastic:

Beyond public school, Scaramucci achieved paramount academic success. He graduated from Tufts University and then went on to earn his law degree from Harvard University. However, Scaramucci did not pursue a career in law; in fact, he failed the bar exam. This was not an issue for Scaramucci at all. Even at Harvard, Scaramucci realized law was not his calling and he wanted to set forth into the world of business. However, in an interview with OneWire, he stated that his mother would simply go into a depression if he dropped out of law school. After graduating, he scored a job with Goldman Sachs in investment banking, but then he was fired by the company. Surprisingly, Goldman Sachs rehired Scaramucci for a position in sales, not investment banking.

The fun facts aren’t over. Interestingly, Scaramucci attended Harvard with the man himself, Barack Obama. But even more so, he supported the democratic Obama through his 2008 run for president. Yes that’s right, Scaramucci, more republican than ever in 2017, once supported a democratic campaign. In addition to supporting the  campaign, he sported extremely liberal stances on issues.

“I’m pro-gay marriage…Pro-choice. Against the death penalty. I have no problem if the government raises my taxes,” he told the New York Times in 2010. Scaramucci was one of the most prominent liberal men on Wall Street. However, he started to question Barack Obama’s financial approaches as he notably stated, “When are we going to stop whacking Wall Street like a piñata?” Scaramucci began to believe that Obama was portraying Wall Street in a rather negative light due to unfortunate events only traceable to a minority of Wall Street individuals. Soon enough, he became a Republican as he assisted in Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign as the national finance co-chair. The most shocking revelation about Anthony Scaramucci is his previous dissatisfaction with his boss, president Trump. Even before delving into the specific remarks the Wall Street financier made about the president, it is important to note that Scaramucci was behind other Republican candidates earlier in the 2016 election such as Jeb Bush. It was a rather rocky road to Scaramucci’s commitment to Trump. This is one of the main points of controversy regarding Mr. Scaramucci. When appointed communications director, well-informed Americans were under the impression that Scaramucci is very quick to change sides. In 2015, in an appearance on Fox Business, Scaramucci stated that the US’ now-president was a “hack politician”, “anti-American”, and would only live up to be “president of the Queens county bullies association.” Clearly, Scaramucci did not agree with Trump’s campaign infrastructure during the election and he certainly didn’t agree with his stances. But now, Scaramucci is the White House’s medium for whatever President Trump desires to communicate.  The president must not let the greatest of criticisms get in his way of handpicking the people he wants on his team in the White House. Although Scaramucci denounced the president, the president must have realized that Scaramucci would fit instrumentally into his campaign. This is not only because of his accolades, but also because his seemingly effortless ability to effectively inculcate specific mindsets and ideas into the American people. If the American media can remember the dirt he brushed onto the president in the past, the media will certainly keep track of Scaramucci’s remarks to come. And regarding the president’s opinion on him, Scaramucci does indeed express regret and is hopeful for eventual forgiveness and forgetfulness. “[President Trump] brings [the anti-Trump comments] up every 15 seconds,” said Scaramucci at a mid-July White House press meeting.  He continued to say “Mr. President, if you’re listening, I personally apologize for the 50th time for saying that.” It is an intelligent move for Scaramucci to “clear the air” before he assumes a critical role in the White House. Although a fraction of Americans may consider this to be superficial and rather forced, it is important to realize and remember that Scaramucci is a very vocal individual and he does in fact mean what he says. It can only be hoped that the past does not act as an impediment to a fruitful relationship between Mr. Scaramucci and President Trump.
